    Martyrs Cemetery of Chongqing Gele Mountain is located at the foot of Gele Mountain in ShapingBa District, which was once the seat of the broadcasting station, the jails, and the headquarter of the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics of the Military Council during the reign of the Kuomintang (KMT) Government. At that time, it was truly a horror abyss where revolutionary patriots were locked up and killed cruelly. For example, Ye Ting, the commander-in-chief of the New Fourth Army, was imprisoned here after the Southern Anhui Incident. And lots of famous communists like Luo Shiwen, Che Yaoxian, Jiang Zhujun, and patriotic military leaders Yang Hucheng and Huang Xiansheng were all murdered here. On November 27th of 1949, the eve of the Kuomintang’s retreat from the mainland, more than 300 revolutionary patriots were killed in a bloodcurdling holocaust, which is now known as the ‘December 27th Massacre’ shocking the whole world. After liberation, both of the jails -- White Residence and Cinder Cave, were set up as exhibition centres, displaying historical objects and photos from that period. And now millions of people come here to pay a visit in memory of these patriots every year.
    In 1988, Martyrs Cemetery of Chongqing Gele Mountain was ranked as the state-level key cultural relic preservation site and in 1997 it was listed as one of China’s 100 Models of Patriotic Education Bases by the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of CPC.
