Taiyuan Liberation Memorial is located in Niutuo Village of Dongshan in Taiyuan. With its steep terrains and the criss-cross ravines, the Niutuo Village has always been the defensive and offensive military fortress since ancient times, making it known as “Portal of Taiyuan”. In the battle of the liberation in Taiyuan, the People’s Liberation Army managed to take four major forts in Dongshan such as Niutuo Village through a bloody battle which lasted for more than a month. On April 24, 1949, Taiyuan was finally liberated. Thus, the evil rule under Yan Xishan for 38 years, was overthrown.
To cherish the memory of revolutionary martyrs, to enlighten later generations and praise the sacrificial martyrs in fighting against for the four forts in Dongshan, the Municipal Committee and Municipal People’s Government of Taiyuan decided to build a cemetery of revolutionary martyrs in Niutuo Village in 1959. Then later in 1988 the cemetery was expanded to the present Taiyuan Liberation Memorial. Its texture structure and style are both novel and profoundly meaningful. The whole building is grand and magnificent, well-arranged and spacious, which composes a gorgeous three-dimensional picture, making us feel solemn and respectful.
This memorial is a lively classroom for education on revolutionary tradition and patriotism. Meanwhile it adds glamour to the ancient city – Taiyuan.
