The Memorial of Zhou Enlai is located in Peach Blossom Park to the north of the ancient city of Huaian, which consists of a memorial island and a broad lake with green land around. It covers an area of 350,000 square meters, 70% of which is by water.
The design of the memorial not only features Chinese traditional style and local characteristics but applies advanced techniques of contemporary architecture as well. The main hall is located on a green lawn, which means that our beloved Premier Zhou is a loyal son of the Chinese people, who was and will be rooted in our motherland forever with his spirits inspiring the Chinese nation all the time. The four granite columns of the hall were designed to commemorate that Premier Zhou had proposed the strategy of “Four Modernizations” four times, respectively in 1954, 1962, 1964 and 1975, which had become not only his lifelong struggling goal, but also a political will left to the Party and the people. Four granite columns support a hipped roof, making people think of the cattle sheds used in the plains of Yangtze-Huai Rivers in ancient China to irrigate fields, signifying that Zhou Enlai had spent all his life serving the Chinese people.
Today, the Memorial of Zhou Enlai has been the focus of the world and admired by thousands of people. Since its opening it has attracted nearly ten million visitors from home and abroad in ten years. And now the Peach Blossom Park regains its former glory with the track of visitors commemorating this great man.
