    The Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan cemetery of revolutionary martyrs, whose construction began in March 1946 and ended in October 1950, is located in the middle of Cemetery Road in Handan city. The cemetery covers 320 acres and consists of north and south yards. It is built up in honor of the martyrs of the Front Command, political department of the Eighth Route Army Headquarters and the 129th division in the military region of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan. The martyrs’ cemetery is the earliest building with the largest scale, owning the largest number of inscriptions by elder proletarian revolutionists in the middle of Cemetery Road. Furthermore, it is also one of the early-established and large-scaled martyrs’ cemeteries in China.
     The cemetery is divided into north and south yards. The north is mainly typical of garden architecture. The grand architectural complex with national characteristics is shaded among green pines and verdant cypresses. The south yard, then, mainly tombs. In the front, there are memorial pavilions and monuments. Behind them, there are tombs of more than 200 leaders above regiment level and well-known combat heroes.
     The construction and development of the martyrs’ cemetery has long been receiving loving care of the Party and state leaders. In October, 1986, approved by the State Council, the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced it as the first group of national key martyr memorial building protection units. In 1995, the provincial Party committee and government of Hebei identified it as “the base of patriotism education in Hebei”. In the same year, it was named as the national base of patriotism education by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
