Luding Bridge Revolutionary Relics Exhibition Hall was constructed and put into operation in 1980, and it is located opposite to Luding Bridge Tower in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. It collects photos, document literature and material objects about how the Red Army fought their way across the Dadu River and how they swiftly took hold of the Luding Bridge. Also some Red Army leaders’ inscriptions, some calligraphies and paintings of some famous figures are on display. All these make up an extremely abundant collection.
Luding Bridge, seated on the Dadu River in the west of the county, started its construction in the 44th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (A.D. 1705) and completed in the fifth lunar Month of the next year (over 300 years away from now), is an ancient iron chain bridge over-crossing the Dadu River in the west of Luding County of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. On May 29th, 1935, in the Long March, the Red Army got the great victory of “Swiftly taking hold of the Luding Bridge” here, thus composing a gorgeous chapter in the Chinese history. So comrade Mao Zedong wrote a magnificent poem named The Long March, in which one line reads: Dadu River Bridge blocked our way ahead and its iron chains were chill, to praise the heroic deeds of the Red Army soldiers. From then on, the Luding Bridge is well-known home and abroad.
According to relevant data, Luding Bridge is 103 meters long and 3 meters wide, and there are 13 iron chains fixed to abutment wells on both ends, of which 9 chains are for walking and 4 for handrails(equally 2 on each side). Totally it has 12164 iron hoops connected one by one, and the iron accessories of the bridge weigh more than 40 tons. The Luding Bridge is an important passage and a key military post for people to get into Tibet from Sichuan Province.
