From 1934 to 1936, the Hongyuan Prairie witnessed the toughest and the most honorable march in the history of Chinese revolution---the Red Army crossing the grasslands. Hence then, this ancient and mysterious land was known around the world. In 1935, the Red Army went across the beautiful but dangerous prairie and swamps to avoid the enemy. Many young Red Army soldiers, without life experience in prairies, sank into the inclement swamp and were swallowed by the swamps, leaving the most tragic and moving pages in the history of the Long March.
Hongyuan County became a revolutionary site with everlasting glory and its reputation has spread home and abroad after the Red Army left a variety of moving deeds of those years. In memory of the Red Army’s passing, and for the cultivation and development of this prairie, the State Council named it Hongyuan County in 1960. Nowadays, its elegant natural prairie scenery and unique cultural landscape are continuously attracting more and more people.
