Tiananmen Square, one of the largest city squares in the world, is situated in the heart of Beijing. It stretches 880 meters from north to south and 500 meters from east to west. The total area is 440,000 square meters, spacious enough to accommodate 1,000,000 people to assemble at a time.
The Square witnessed Chinese people’s struggle against foreign aggression:the May 4th Movement, the December 9th Movement, and the May 20th Movement, in which the Chinese people’s perseverance and fearless heroic spirit has been fully demonstrated. After the Peoples Republic of China was founded, Tiananmen Square was widened and Monument to the Peoples Heroes was erected in the center of the square. West of the Square is the Great Hall of People, with the Chinese History Museum and Chinese Revolutionary Museum in the east and Ma Zedong Memorial Hall in the south.
On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the foundation of the Peoples Republic of China on the Tiananmen Rostrum, and raised the first five-star red flag with his own hands. Hence Tiananmen Rostrum became a symbol of New China; its solemn image became an important component of Chinas national emblem.
