Red Tower, built in 1918, was one of the old dorms of Peking University. It was also known as the cradle of the May 4th Movement and a sacred place of spreading Marxism and founding the Communist Party in the earliest period.
An H-shaped and 4-floor building, the Red Tower has 4 circular columns to prop up the protruding square foyer in the front door. Red Tower is now established as the memorial hall of the New Culture Movement. 6 exhibition halls are furnished in the first floor from the east to the west: the office of Li Dazhao, Cai Yuapei exhibition hall, Chen Duxiu exhibition hall, a video hall, the rebuilt classrooms and reading room.
The office of Li Dazhao lies at a south room in the east crossband with swivel chair like apron between a bookcase on the north wall and wide desks, a square table and bamboo chair against the south wall. Shortly after the construction of Red Tower, Li Dazhao founded the first Chinese research team of Marxism there. The Chinese Marxism was gestated, and the Communist Party was bred there. In Cai Yuanpei exhibition hall, you can grasp Mr. Cai’s extraordinary whole life from plenty of pictures and entities. Without Cai, Peking University would have groped for the direction in the darkness for a long time. After the designation, many people persuaded Cai out of inauguration because of the complexity and said that if he take office, he would be humiliated. Cai pondered it over and said that is the reason why he took it. Cai brought in New Youth, recommended Chen Duxiu, introduced democracy and science, introduced Hushi’s vernacular literature and Luxun’s first vernacular novel. He adopted the tradition of tolerance and democracy of Peking University, introduced the Chinese new educational concept, the New Culture Movement and the May 4th Movement. Since then this kind of Chinese culture slowly rose up like a red sun. Chen Duxiu exhibition hall in the Red Tower has a distinctive arrangement. At the front door, Chen’s home in Beijing then, the newsroom of New Youth, the number 9 in Shaft lane, was rejuvenated, the gate closed and two stone lions squatting down on both sides.
Though the great men in the Red Tower were not alive, their spirit will last forever. Some other great men like hushi, Luxun, Jiang Menglin, Zhou Shuren, Sheng Yimo and so on once worked there and would always be the pioneer of the age. Their patriotism will inspire us forever.
