Seeking the Last Station of Chairman Mao’s Taking Exam in Beijing

In March 23th, 1949, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou En’lai, Ren Bishi and other leaders commanded the central leading body of the Party and subordinate organs heading for Beijing from Xibo slope. Via the Tang town, Baoding city and so on, on the evening of March 24th, they arrived at Zhuo town (now Zhuozhou city) by cars to spend the last night. After that, CPC held power in Beijing,

The Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao’s Beijing Exam in Zhuo is located at Sanyi primary school, covering over 400 square meters at Fenzi Hutong in Zhuozhou The original building has been demolished except the one where Chairman Mao lived in that night. On March 23th, the motorcade set out from Xibo slope and reached Zhuo town the next evening. They studied and arranged the strategies for emancipating the whole China all that night. The crucial period in which CPC transferred itself from revolutionary political party into the ruling party was called “taking examination in Beijing” by Mao and Zhou with a bit teasing tone. “

“We have taken the revolution for 28 years, but what will we do after holding power? We should remain modest and prudent, to refrain from arrogance and rashness, to care for people, serve people and the country.” Guided by the thought, Mao stressed that retracing meant fail, and CPC must get good results in Beijing.

After Mao entered Zhuo town, seeing the mournfully empty street and declining business, he felt puzzled. He turned Zhuo town into the first state at the south of Beijing with simple words. Wang Chengjun, the county secretary then, explained to Chairman that merchants had been driven away to Dongguan by Kuomintang, after liberation they still were not allowed to move back. Hearing this, Mao claimed:”to build a new china, economy should be enlivened first. The principle of managing a city should be mastered; people’s demands should be satisfied. Thus the market should be moved back.” Due to these comments, the order and market in Zhuo town returned to normal, turning it into “the first commercial state” at the south of Beijing.

A part of The Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao’s Beijing Exam now is the activity room for pioneers of Sanyi primary school, displaying students’ technological manual works and experimental apparatus; another part exhibits the original appearance at the night when Mao stayed and some historical materials and reports.
