The People’s Liberation Army occupied Nanjing

Over Zhongshan swept a storm, headlong, our mighty army, a million strong, has crossed the Great River.

The City, a tiger crouching, a dragon curling, outshines its ancient glories; In heroic triumph heaven and earth have been overturned.

With power and to spare we must pursue the tottering foe, and not ape Xiang Yu the conqueror seeking idle fame.

Were Nature sentient, she too would pass from youth to age, but Man's world is mutable, seas become mulberry fields.

This is a poem commemorating the liberation of Nanjing and the victory of the revolution. On April 20th, 1949, the all-round civil war was coming to an end and the Kuomintang troops were defeated and refused to sign the peace agreement. On the night of April 21st, a hundred thousand grand divisions of the Chinese people's Liberation Army crossed the Yangtze River by force in three ways in the front line of more than 1000 Li from Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province in the east to hukou, Jiangxi Province in the West. On the night of the 23rd, Chen Yi’s third field army occupied Nanjing. When Mao Zedong heard the news, he was elated and wrote this poem.
