From the end of 1927 to the summer of 1929, Deng Xiaoping served as secretary general of the CPC Central Committee. At the end of 1929 and the very beginning of 1930, Deng led the Baise Uprising and Longzhou Uprising in Guangxi Province with Zhang Yunyi and others and founded the 7th and 8th armies of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army as well as the Zuojiang and Youjiang Revolutionary Base Areas.

In 1931, he went to the Central Revolutionary Base Area in southern Jiangxi Province and western Fujian Province, serving as the secretary general of the General Political Department of the Military Commission, the chief editor of Red Star, the red army newspaper, and the leader of the local organization of the CPC in Jiangxi. In 1933, he was dismissed by the “left” party leaders for supporting Mao Zedong’s correct claim. In October 1934, Deng took part in the Long March, and served as secretary general of the CPC Central Committee at the end of the year. In January 1935, he attended the enlarged session of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee held in Zunyi County, Guizhou Province.
