Zhang Yunyi was born in a poor peasant family in Shangliao Village, Touyuan Town, Wenchang City, Hainan Province. In 1909, he dedicated himself to the Revolution of 1911, participating in the ninth and tenth armed uprisings led by Sun Yat-sen, undergoing the test of battle.
Zhang Yunyi was promoted to Chief of Staff of the 25th Division of the Fourth Army of the National Revolutionary Army due to his bravery and achievements in the Northern Expedition War in 1926. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in Wuhan in November, 1926. He took over as Qiongya Garrison Commander in 1938.
Zhang Yunyi died of illness in Beijing on November 19, 1974. The CPC Central Committee held a memorial service for him in the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery Auditorium, and highly appraised him, who deserves to be an outstanding strategist of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and a loyal proletarian revolutionary.
