Ma Maojie, a female of Han ethnicity, was born in September 1935. She joined the Communist Party of China in June 1954. A native of Wuwei, Anhui Province, she later served as the Deputy Manager of the former Hefei Garment, Shoe and Hat Industry Corporation. During the the War of Liberation, she became an outstanding representative of the model supporters of the front lines, and is famously known as the “Heroine of the Yangtze River Crossing.” At the age of 14, she joined the “Yangtze River Crossing Assault Team” during the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign. Despite being shot in the arm, she gritted her teeth and pressed on, fearlessly braving the hail of bullets to cross the Yangtze River six times and successfully ferry three batches of the People’s Liberation Army troops to the shore. Chairman Mao Zedong met her cordially and inscribed a message: “To Maojie: Study hard and make progress every day.” After joining the workforce, she never saw herself as a hero, working quietly for the Party in humble positions instead. After retiring, she voluntarily gave over 300 lectures on revolutionary tradition education. She was honored with the titles of “First-Class Meritorious Figure in the Yangtze River Crossing” and “Model Supporter of the Frontline.”
