In September 1958, the world archaeological community was shocked at the news, broadcasted by the Xinghua News Agency, of the successful excavation of the Dingling Tomb by the Chinese archaeologists.

After that, excavation tide swept the country rapidly. For fear of being lagged behind, provinces were eager to excavate imperial tombs such as the Han Tombs, Tang Tombs, and Qing Tombs. In this situation, a group of people such as Zheng Zhenduo and Xia Nai, the deputy director of history institute in Chinese Academy of Science jointly wrote to Zhou Enlai, requesting to stop the excavation of monarchs’ mausoleums. The State Council promptly issued an document of ceasing any excavation to monarchs’ mausoleums, which put a resolute stop to this abnormal excavation trend and save the Chinese culture from destructive damage which could have happened in no time.
