
On May 6, 1952, the central government who officially approved the establishment of Wuhan Iron Steel Company in Wuhan in order to motivate the industrial development of the whole south.
In April 1954, Qingshan was confirmed as the site of the steel factory by the central government. At the end of the same year, the site was formally named Wuhan Iron Steel Company, which is the first super large iron and steel enterprise invested and constructed by the state after the founding of new China.
WISCO was invested 1.17 billion yuan, while Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, known as "the first bridge of the Yangtze River", was invested 70 million yuan, merely a fraction of WISCO.
On September 13, 1958, Mao zedong ,accompanied by Wang Renzhong, the secretariat of Hubei provincial Party committee, inspected WISCO to see the first hot metal coming out of the furnace.
