Three Attacks on the Shuimen Bridge

Picture Resource: people.cn

The Shuimen Bridge is located at the Hwangchoryong Pass south of Koto-ri, North Korea. With a span of only 8.8 meters, it was the only single-lane bridge in the Chosin Reservoir area. During the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, the U.S. 1st Marine Division suffered heavy attacks from the Chinese People’s Volunteers and attempted to retreat southward from Koto-ri to Sinheung-ri. The Shuimen Bridge became a crucial point on their escape route. To block the enemy’s southward retreat, the Chinese People’s Volunteers bombed the bridge three times, while the U.S. forces made urgent repairs each time. In the end, American troops narrowly crossed the bridge to Sinheung-ri and continued their southward retreat to Hungnam Port, while they evacuated by sea, thus avoiding total annihilation. The Shuimen Bridge therefore became the focus of the later stages of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The struggle of three demolitions and three repairs had a profound impact on the course of the battle.
