Poverty incidence, also known as the "poverty population index", refers to the proportion of the number of poor people living below the poverty line in the total population of a country or region. Since the incidence of poverty is more intuitive for the description of the the poverty situation of a country or region, it is not only helpful to investigate the poverty situation of a country or region, but also an important indicator to test the effectiveness of poverty reduction policies.

In the fight against poverty, the incidence of poverty is not only an important indicator to identify poor villages. Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, more than 700 million poor people in rural China have been lifted out of poverty, and the incidence of poverty has dropped from 97.5% in 1978 to 1.7% at the end of 2018, creating a Chinese miracle in the history human poverty reduction.
