At the beginning of the new millennium, the leaders around the world formulated a broad vision at the United Nations, aiming at fighting poverty from many aspects. This vision was transformed into eight Millennium Development Goals, as the overall development framework of the whole world in the first 15 years of the new Millennium.

The eight goals include: (1) eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; (2) achieving universal primary education; (3) promoting gender equality and empowering women; (4) decreasing child mortality rate; (5) improving maternal health care; (6)fighting against AIDS, malaria and other diseases; (7) ensuring environmental sustainability; (8) formulating a global partnership for development.
