In Chinese translation of science and technology English, amplification can be used in three situations:
Firstly, the amplification can be used upon the need of Chinese grammar. For instance, the plural form of English nouns is adding s or es at the end of nouns directly while Chinese needs quantifiers according to the meaning of those words, such as“许多”“大量”“一些”, to express the plural form of English in Chinese translation.
Secondly, the amplification can be used upon the meaning of context. It’s reasonable that proper nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs are amplified in target text to convey the meaning of source text when translator wants to express more details of it.
Thirdly, the amplification can be used upon the need of rhetorical devices. In the translation of science and technology English, the words need precise; the content needs objective; the logic needs meticulous. But, sometimes target text needs to be amplified descriptive words to express vividly the meaning of source text when dealing with the translation, which are modal particles, verbs, appropriate adjectives or adverbs. Moreover, some reduplicated words or four-word phrases in it are appreciated, too.
